Forty-six years after pioneering the first front-wall, or “picture-frame,” refrigeration unit, Carrier Transicold Pte Ltd presented its one-millionth unit during a ceremony at its Singapore manufacturing facility. The milestone PrimeLINE unit with XtendFRESH atmosphere control system was presented to CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping company.
“The one-millionth container unit is an accomplishment not only for our company and the thousands of employees around the world who have helped make it possible, but also for the marine shipping industry,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold & Refrigeration Systems.
“Today, 52% of world seaborne trade is delivered efficiently and economically by container vessel, and 65% of refrigerated products are transported in containers, the majority of which are efficiently and reliably temperature-controlled by Carrier Transicold systems,” said Chiou Fun Sin, president, Global Container Refrigeration, Carrier Transicold. “On any given day, the value of cargo delivered by Carrier Transicold units alone is valued at $6 billion.”
Alexis Michel, senior vice-president, Container and Reefer Logistics, CMA CGM, said, “We have significantly reduced our carbon footprint over the past 10 years, and we are always seeking out new technologies that will help us reach our sustainability goals while also meeting our high standards for performance and efficiency. The PrimeLINE unit wins on both of these fronts, which is why we have been building up our fleet with PrimeLINE units since they were launched in 2008.”
The PrimeLINE unit offers several environmentally sustainable features including the unit’s validation by UL Environment as having a 93% recyclability rate, joining Carrier’s NaturaLINE unit as the only container refrigeration units to achieve recyclability validation. The PrimeLINE unit also delivers greater cooling capacity for perishable loads as a container refrigeration system using non-ozone depleting R-134a refrigerant.
The XtendFRESH system’s ability to remove ethylene—which is given off by ripening produce and will accelerate ripening if left unchecked—while actively controlling oxygen and carbon dioxide levels is key to its performance. By slowing the ripening process, the XtendFRESH system lengthens the amount of time produce can spend in refrigerated transit—by more than double in some cases.
