More than 70% of all seafood and 35% of all produce consumed in the United States are imported. With $49 billion worth of imported foods, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its regulatory allies oversee more than 420,000 domestic and foreign facilities. Importers of food products intended for introduction and consumption in the United States through international commerce are responsible for ensuring that the products are safe, sanitary, wholesome, and labeled according to US requirements.
Food importers face special challenges from Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, the FDA and USDA, Center for Disease Control, Food Safety Inspection Service, Agricultural and Marketing Services, Food and Nutrition Services, the USDA, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, and Federal Trade Commission (FTC). These organizations combine their enforcement powers to assure that food produced, processed, and transported into the United States for consumption meet food safety requirements.
This 1.3-hour pre-recorded training is designed to help understand the hoops a company will have to jump through as it produces, processes, distributes, ships, and approaches any US border with a food shipment.
Those importing human or animal food or food supplements and ingredients into the United States for distribution and consumption are impacted. Understanding rules and regulations can help reduce risk to consumers and companies. Food supply chain members are responsible to assure reliability and food safety of their suppliers. Qualification and management of producers, shippers, and carriers are critical to an organization’s success and survival.
