EPA recognizes NFI as a 2019 SmartWay High Performer

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently recognized supply chains solutions provider NFI, whose services include refrigerated transportation, as a 2019 SmartWay High Performer.

The SmartWay list identifies logistics providers, truck carriers and shippers that have attained significant shipping and freight efficiencies. Companies are chosen based on annual emissions reports for partners, including efficiency and air-quality performance data. NFI was top-ranked for the EPA’s carbon efficiency metric, based on grams per mile and grams per ton-mile, the company said.

Fewer than 10% of all SmartWay carriers operate fleets efficiently enough to make the SmartWay High Performer list for carbon emissions.

Founded in 1932, NFI continually works to identify and implement innovative solutions to reduce its carbon footprint throughout operations in North America. The company’s dedicated and drayage fleet of more than 4,000 tractors and 9,700 trailers contains a portion of electric trucks, Near Zero compressed natural gas trucks fueled with renewable energy, and electric yard horse tractors, NFI said.

Most recently, NFI implemented its first charging station in Southern California to operate its electric vehicles. Further, NFI operates green equipment within its 50 million square feet of distribution space, including lithium battery-powered forklifts.

“NFI remains committed as a leader in providing sustainable supply chain solutions to make a difference within our communities,” said Bill Bliem, senior vice president of fleet services at NFI. “This recognition is a testament to our sustainability efforts throughout our organization. We look forward to continuing to invest in green initiatives and connecting with like-minded allies to create an even bigger impact as a socially responsible partner.”

In addition to being named a SmartWay High Performer, NFI was recognized for its sustainability efforts as a top-75 green supply chain partner by Inbound Logistics, and a top green provider by Food Logistics.
