TxDOT sets temporary weight limits on I-45, I-20 interchanges

The Texas Department of Transportation recently put in place weight limits on three of the four direct connector ramps at the interchanges of Interstate 45 (I-45) at Interstate 20 (I-20) south of Dallas. The weight limits that are temporarily in place include the following restrictions:

  • Per Axle – 20,000 pounds
  • Tandem Vehicles – 34,000 pounds

There is no gross vehicle weight limit posted

Types of vehicles that are restricted include:

  • All permit loads
  • Mobile cranes
  • Concrete trucks
  • Recycle Trucks
  • Container Trucks
  • EV class of fire engines (typically only used at airports)
  • Well Service Trucks

It is illegal for trucks to ignore the new weight limitations. The Dallas County Overweight Enforcement Unit will issue citations and fines accordingly.

The direct connector ramps that will be closed for two weeks include:

  • I-45 Northbound to I-20 Westbound
  • I-45 Northbound to I-20 Eastbound
  • I-20 Westbound to I-45 Southbound
